Some comments about Amethyst

Amethyst is a violet variety of quartz often used in jewelry. Like other varieties of macrocrystalline quartz, amethyst has transparent to translucent clarity and a vitreous luster. With a hardness of 7, the color of Amethyst can range from deep purple to lavender. This semiprecious stone is the traditional birthstone for February.

Of very variable intensity, the color of amethyst is often laid out in stripes parallel to the final faces of the crystal.

Amethyst is produced in abundance from the state of Minas Gerais in Brazil where it occurs in large geodes within volcanic rocks. This purple quartz is relatively common in the Canadian provinces of Ontario and Nova Scotia. Amethyst is the official state gemstone of South Carolina. Amethyst may be found in alluvial deposits, lining volcanic cavities, or metamorphic rock fissures. Basically, Amethyst is a very common mineral and is found worldwide.

The biggest factor in the value of amethyst is the color displayed. As amethyst is readily available in large structures, the value of the gem is not primarily defined by carat weight; this is different to most gemstones where the carat weight exponentially increases the value of the stone. This mineral can be found as tall structures or in clusters of small stubby pyramidal crystals

When used as a gemstone, Amethyst is often heat treated to deepen the color, or to transform it into Citrine. It is often faceted into jewelry cuts, and some are cut as cabochons.

Purple Amethyst has been highly esteemed throughout the ages for its stunning beauty and legendary powers to stimulate, and soothe, the mind and emotions. One special virtue of this gemstone has been that of preventing drunkenness and overindulgence. It is also considered to have healing powers to help with physical ailments, emotional issues, and in Energy Healing and Chakra balancing.

And finally, amethyst has long been used to open the spiritual and psychic centers, making it one of the power stones.
